Tamil Nadu and NUS agree to expand postgraduate and research links
Guidance Tamil Nadu and the National University of Singapore have signed an agreement covering exchanges, industry projects, scholarships and advanced study.
The memorandum signed on August 29 allows government and private universities in Tamil Nadu to develop student exchanges, industry-linked projects, immersion programmes, masterclasses and seminars with NUS. It also seeks scholarship and co-funding arrangements for Tamil Nadu students pursuing postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Singapore.
Guidance Tamil Nadu managing director and chief executive Deepak Jacob said Chennai’s academic strengths and shared commitment to excellence made it a natural starting point for NUS in India. NUS acting vice-provost Ang Wee Han said the university wanted a sustained presence in Tamil Nadu and a Master’s- and PhD-level talent pipeline whose graduates could contribute to the ASEAN region.
Ang and Jacob signed the agreement at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai. It is NUS’s first memorandum with an Indian state government. A postgraduate fair and masterclasses at the venue attracted more than 1,000 students. More than 50 faculty and administrators from 14 departments advised visitors on business, medicine, engineering, social sciences, arts and public policy courses.
NUS also held an industry networking session with corporate leaders and chief executives in Chennai on August 28. Graduate School acting dean Wong Lim Soon said deeper engagement with India could broaden research questions and support multidisciplinary work with wider global relevance.
